Description

South African Silver Krugerrand is a South African coin, first minted on 3 july 1967. This coin originally was minted to help market South African gold and produced by Rand Refinery and the South African Mint.  It was introduced as a vehicle for private ownership of gold.  The name is composed of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic (depicted on the obverse) and rand, the South African unit of currency.  On the reverse side of the Krugerrand is a pronking springbok, South Africa’s national animal.

The silver krugerrand was first released in 2018, more than 50 years after the introduction of the gold krugerrand.  The 1 oz silver krugerrand shares much of the design of the gold coins. The obverse of the coin has the image of Paul Kruger.  He rose to national prominence in the Second Boer War as South Africans of Dutch descent fought against British influence.  He served as president of the South Africa Republic from 1883 – 1902.  The coin’s denomination is 1 rand.

South African Silver Krugerrand coin’s reverse features the Springbok antelope leaping across a South African plain.  The Springbok is a national symbol.  The species is common to southern Africa nations with a large population in South Africa.  It also contains the date of issue, weight and purity.
