Description
The 1 oz. Silver Buffalo Round pays homage to the Buffalo Nickel or Indian Head Nickel designed by James Earl Fraser in December, 1912..
The obverse of the round shows a reproduction Indian Head design, The visage of the Indian in the original design was a composite of several Native Americans. Fraser stated that he used the composite of three Indians, including Iron Tail, Two Moons and a third that escaped his memory for the remainder of his life. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the as well.
The reverse according to Fraser, the animal that appears is an American Bison Black Diamond located at the Bronx Zoo. However this particular Bison was never in that zoo but was located in Central Park Zoo. Years after the design the sculptor, Beniamino Bufano, claimed he designed the reverse when he served as apprentice to Fraser.
Unfortunately it all ended in tragedy when Black Diamond was sold and slaughtered in 1915. Black Diamond mounted head has been displayed at coin shows. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the weight and purity.
